Approaching worthily to the table of the Lord

Pastor Willy González.

In our church, we have 96 opportunities to approach the table of the Lord, this is a mystery we have to find out; as we do naturally and get ready when we have a big meal, our body and condition is prepared to receive food for example what we like or dislike to eat, now well when we take this process into our spiritual life we see that they are quite similar for example before we eat we wash our hands, before we participate from the table of the Lord we have to clean our soul from all dirt we had acquired from the world, it is necessary to approach the table of the Lord worthily.

1Corinthians 11:22 (ESV)What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.

In this verse we read how Paul the Apostle was giving instructions in how to approach the table of the Lord, and here we read that the Corinthians underestimated the value of the table, and this is a big reason why today people do not approach the table of the Lord.

Malachi 1:12 (ESV)But you profane it when you say that the Lord’s table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food may be despised.

Once again, we read the attitude of underestimating, because the people didn’t value of the table.

Genesis 25:30 (ESV)And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore, his name was called Edom.

Esau underestimated his firstborn right, he didn’t know the value.

TYPES OF UNDERSTIMATION

1.

2Samuel 6:16 (ESV) As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart.

To underestimate the attitude of worship of others.

2.

1Timothy 6:2 (ESV) Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved. Teach and urge these things.

To underestimate a believer.

3.

1Samuel 2:17 (ESV) Thusthe sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD, for the men treated the offering of the LORD with contempt.

To underestimate the offerings for the Lord

4.

1Samuel 2:30 (ESV)Therefore the LORD the God of Israel declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

To underestimatApe the Lord. (consequences)

5.

Proverbs 11:12 (ESV)Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent.

To underestimate a person, a neighbor.

6.

Luke 18:9 (ESV) He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt:

To underestimate others.

7.

Ecclesiastes 2:17 (ESV) So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

To underestimate your own life.

8.

Esther 1:17 (ESV) For the queen’s behavior will be made known to all women, causing them to look at their husbands with contempt, since they will say, ‘King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, and she did not come.’

To underestimate the spouse

When we underestimate, we do not estimate the value of something, in our case the value of approach the Table of the Lord, and how valuable our salvation is; our Lord Jesus Christ suffered underestimation to give us the right to participate and defeat underestimation at the cross, therefore we should not feel underestimated or underestimate because we have the power to defeat underestimation.

Hebrews 12:2(ESV)looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

In the Bible we read several examples of people not being affected by underestimation, David is one example because he suffered underestimation but defeated them with the power given by the Lord:

  • 1Samuel 17:42 Goliath
  • 2Samuel 6:20-21 His wife, Mickal

If we approach the table of the Lord with an attitude of underestimation the Lord gives us the power to defeat this feelings and approach worthily to the table of the Lord.
